I'm betting it cuts ... bread ... just fine. Any other use would have any male with a brain running for the hills!

Lucky stiff. I've never found one of those anywhere. Went to two stores locally today and came home with what i left with, minus some gasoline. At least somebody scored.

I was out of the house at 5am to get to an estate sale starting at 8. I was 5th in line and no.1 was going to the toys too. Two toys struck my fancy, only got one. The one that got away was a large Dayton Hill Climber Train engine with Coal Car. But I'm happy with this Schoenhut Naval War Toy. A few missing parts to make and the and let the fun begin.

Also the Fab Three (cake toppers) and Old King Cole (1930s lead toy) having a jolly ole time.

A small thing which pleased me immensely. 1968 model and a whole twenty five pence. And the restaurant actually spins!

Went to an estate sale this morning at Way Too Friggin' Early and in the "kept the engine running" cold. Wore a hat, my down coat, gloves and two pair of socks for a reason. Was it worth it? For once, YEP. Came home tired and chilly but happy.

For starters, I ended up with an emerald green glass Blenko water pitcher for $4. The fish is for my niece, hollow and hand signed. The squirrel is one of those Swedish glass ones; a friend is getting that. Oddly, it's signed Finland.

There was a true mourning brooch too, probably gold and onyx but not marked. I'm betting it had a micromosaic or cameo in the center, now long gone. Sterling and lapis earrings. Two pair Mikal Golan earrings and the brooch to match one of them. A JJ Christmas tree (MINE!). Napier sterling leaf pin. Two pair amber and sterling earrings. Catherine Popesco. The kicker was a box of "junk" in the garage. "Oh this is the stuff I threw out. You can have that (for pennies)." The Junk pile included a river of silver with onyx SIGNED sterling necklace in perfect shape, sterling snowflake earrings (probably Skinger), a knotted on cord pearl tin cup necklace, pearl and sterling flower earrings, sterling and crystal earrings and a "broken" ceramic and probably silver necklace I can fix in ten seconds. There's a magnatic clasp costume necklace too - took me 30 seconds to "fix", i.e. thread the chain back through the pendant.

On the way home, a charity thrift that's the sister to the one in West Hartford yielded probable gold ball earrings, a solid sterling necklace, and a Patent Pending Trifari necklace that I've IDed as 1950 Alfred Philippe. The three together were $17 with tax. Meanwhile they wanted $20 for a Florenza brooch with missing stones and $40 for a sterling ring. Go figure - that's those charity shops for you.

    Fun score Evelyb! :)

By all means check that onyx brooch for gold content.

My guess is it's gold; the Victorians didn't always mark things.

Another possibility is that it had a memento compartment, although it looks a bit small. Think micromosaic more likely than cameo.
