I found 4 of these at a local thrift store today. A fellow regular asked me if she could have 2 of them & I gave them to her, but now I'm wondering if I should have declined (politely)?
These appear to be nicely carved from a block of wood & painted gold. The details of the figures make me think they may be more rare than I originally thought.
Anyone know what these are called so I can try to read more about them?
    Are they old? Rare?
    Thank you!

Stunning, journey. These are Chinese panels as they are used in traditional house interiors and furniture. They are not antique, these are still being made, but they are in a centuries old tradition and craftsmanship.
The scenes are from history or mythology.

    I would have declined politely.:sorry:

When we were in Hongkong in the early 70s the new ones were more expensive than the antique ones.:hilarious: Now the old ones are worth more.

I think the 4 were a set or scene? I have some designer purses she was interested in looking at - maybe offer her a trade to get the other 2 back? Or is the price difference not that great?
PS - I love this store - these were $9.95 each & they have new cool things everyday!
It's the only thrift store I've seen that has a line before opening every day! (and why I go there 30 - 45 min early each day to get first look/grab in the better aisles (for me it's antiques, vintage toys, art & then out back to see if any vintage bikes came in - this is where I found the rarest rolling stones poster for $6.95 & sold it on eBay for $900! I'm usually done in an hour but some stay all day - waiting for the carts to come out to grab treasures for their collections or to put on eBay)

They could have been, but they will sell on their own as well. Maybe even better, you'd have to check.
As kyra said, best to google them. Either Ningbo specifically or Chinese in general.
I have no idea of prices of either designer purses or Ningbo carvings, so I can't advise on which will make more money.

antidiem - this is the poster; I wrote the artist & sent her pics - she told me it was one of hers that she gave away to friends (and she also said that if she'd known how big the stones would get she'd have never done it!)

Thanks - don't know why I just said "sure" when she asked me if she could have 2 of them! Maybe the good karma sold my two!
