    hello all,

when I spotted it, I knew I had seen it before.
But couldn't say when or where...a clock, a piece of furniture, a sledge....

After I bought it, I remebered it must have been on a helmet.
A 19th century copy of some sort of antique helmet.
All I coulf find with some resemblance is the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crosby_Garrett_Helmet
Any idea what I am talking about, anyone?
The figure it self is (probably recently!) mounted (glued! No screw.)on that bloc, and 10 cm in any direction.

I think the whole thing is probably recent. I don't see how that verdigris on the base, which looks very controlled, would have naturally developed.

The verdigris is not natural, it is probably paint. And part of the copy it is suposed to represent. In the spirit of Violet Le Duc...

    It is beautiful, Kristiaan.
It does bear resemblance to the griffin(?) on the helmet, although yours seems to be a mythical winged lion type with dog-like ears.
The griffin of the Roman helmet sits on top of a curved base that follows the shape of the helmet. The base of your lion is flat.
But I agree, the winged lion could have been inspired by a Roman helmet finial, and made in the not too distant past.

That doesn't encourage me to think that it's old.

Dont want to sound rude, but it is not of a great concern to me if it is old or new..What I am realy looking for is the helmet I remebered seen that beast on...

Do you remember if it also had a Phrygian cap shape?

The base resembles the base on Kristiaan's winged creature, whereas the Phrygian cap helmet requires a curved base.

No, I had that one for years.
The one I am refearing to is much more eccentric and inspired on ancient civilisation before Christ. But then again produced at the time of that Saxon Ritter helmet. If this saxon helmet, you just showed, is not a recent copy!! Lol!

    It does indeed!
Somebody even sujested it could very well be Harry Potters car mascot....(lol!).
At first I didn't know where I had seen it.
It took me several days to come up with it, but now I am pretty sure it was on a helmet, I must have seen it at some point.
...can't come up with that point eighter... but I am trying...

apologies if I am stating the obvious but isnt a winged lion the symbol of St Mark ie Venice, Italy, so a likely source?
