My nephew found this folk art bamboo walking cane in a trash pile,we were curious and wanted to know if anyone know this writing or is it some type of prayer or what. Can anybody read writing.I was told on one forum it might be Runic which was writing used in old Tolkien's books. Runic is a Norse alphabet predating mediaeval times. Tolkien was a historian of Anglo-European languages who used a self-designed variation of Runic in his The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings novels.

It's difficult to read the scrawl wrapped around the walking stick, but a few words can be read or at least deduced from what's visible and legible -- just enough to get the gist of the inscription, which is ordinary English phonically set in the Runic alphabet. Just from the third photo, the thing appears to be meant to read, in various parts,
    "By Odin
    (illegible)
    (illegible)
    wielder
    of wi(illegible)
    might
    wisdom
    knowledge
    strength"
    ... and so on.

    Neither do I.

With the combination of rune script and English, it could be a souvenir from Orkney, a group of islands off the NE coast of Scotland. They have a part Viking heritage, and make runic souvenirs.

Beat me to it. Runes, indeed. I'd suspect an SCA type person owned it! Tolkien was a serious philologist and expert on true and proto Norse and Celtic languages. His Quenya script, used for Elvish, was indeed part based on runic ones. There's a full grammar for his languages. I've got it. ;)

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

You have talents that we previously didn't realize! I wonder whether Runic should be one of the languages mentioned in the translators thread that @Any Jewelry posted?

Absolutely! @BaseballGames , would you like to add your name? Whoever is the baseballgamer on call can ask one of the others? (I know there is more than one behind the name, but I don't know how many.;))

Thanks very much, Fig and AJ, but your compliments are undeserved. We just plugged what little we could see on the walking stick into the Runic translator to which INH had provided the link.

Only seeing this now. Looks like Tolkien's Dwarvish to me. Or the common tongue (modern English) written in Dwarvish runes.
