Those were commissioned in Japan by European companies. The early 20th century French perfume houses did the same. I have one, can't remember the brand, but will check later.

Not really, but I do have a lot of 'stuff', just like many other forum members. The Japanese box I mentioned came from my great-grandfather's shop in perfumes and other fineries for 'elegant ladies'.:pompous:
    I call it a pawn shop.:hilarious:

The one where no one comes by to pawn their stuff? Or 'in the vaults of pawn stars'?:D

This is the Japanese box I was talking about. As you can see it has had a life. Before my time, I hasten to add.:angelic:
When I was younger (about a century ago), the brand name of a French perfume house was still visible in worn and faded gold paint. Air polution probably did its evil job on that.
If only I remembered which name. I do know he sold a lot of Coty, I still have a Lalique Coty bottle that came from his shop. The shop was sold ca 1922.

As it is, the signature of the Japanese artist or workshop is still faintly visible in the lower left hand corner. These were definitely Japanese made.

Birrell seems to be a very common name, with multiple LTD’s too. But I’ll concede to the chocolate factory. Just this store sticker resembles the OP’s
