This is another of these where I just can't recall where I have seen the design before and I have been flip-flopping on region. I think I have seen the exact enamel pattern before but where escapes me.

It was black when acquired, I thought it was going to be just silver, but turns out to be silver gilt (I don't think it is solid gold given the construction detail etc. Push pin with safety chain hinged closure. Thoughts?

My thought is it's quite pretty. But, of course, that's something you already know.

This makes me think of some Russian jewelry I have seen.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

It's beautiful, @Ce BCA -- and you did an excellent job of cleaning it.

Thanks for the replies so far. Before I cleaning it I suspected possibly Middle East due to the enamel colours and construction. After cleaning it looks very different and Russian came to mid for me as well, but I can't track down anything similar enough to be sure. Norwegian is interesting and I will search in that direction too.

The pin clasp to me says Turkish, but the top does look Slavic/Scandi so.... beats me.

It is gorgeous. Would you mind telling me what you used to to polish it? If gilt I know you have to be careful.

The pin clasp was used in most of Asia and parts of Europe and Africa.
Many Austro-Hungarian bangles have a pin clasp, as do 20th century Florentine silvertone and faux coral bangles of the 'bunch of grapes' and Orientalist decoration types.

This is why I thought of Norway as a possibility, sølje said to be by Marius Hammer:

    And marked Marius Hammer sølje:

Besides, it gives me an opportunity to post some søljes.

Thanks, that is the closest I have got so far. Will do some digging and see if I can find some solje/hammer bangles with the same pin fastening.

A bit of silver dip on a cotton bud (qtip) for the really stubborn areas. Dishsoap with drop of ammonia for the overall clean. Avoid abrasives such as silver polish for gilded items.

Sølje is Norwegian for brooch. A better search term is 'bunad', which is the Norwegian word for traditional costumes in general.
Since your bangle isn't signed, it is probably not by Marius Hammer, but very likely the same period.

Norwegian jewellery is of excellent quality, and their enamels are famous. Many Norwegian enamelists were asked to work in Russia, for Fabergé for instance.

Somewhere in a pile of jewellery bags on my desk is a sølje with a similar star design to the one on your bangle.
I have been repairing some 'stuff', and the last projects buried the sølje, which had a loose part. It is safe and snug in a bag, but I have no idea which bag it is in. If I find it, I'll take a photo.

Interesting, for some reason I had thought it meant 'light' and referred to the style rather than a specific piece of jewellery.

I think it could be etymologically related to the English word 'seal', as a closure of something. After all, brooches started out as fasteners, to 'seal' or close a cloak or dress.
