I purchased this piece quite a few years ago and was told it was Navajo. Wondering if any of the experts might be able to shed any more light on this for me. The dimensions are 57 3/8" long x 18 3/4" wide. Thanks in advance.

The fringe is not a good sign.

Sorry, not Navajo. If you do a search on the forum for the term "Navajo" posted by @Taupou, you will find several discussions of how to recognize genuine Navajo weavings. Yours was made by Spanish weavers in the Southwest, known as Chimayo.

Just to completely clarify, the weaving is known as Chimayo, and is named for the village of Chimayo, New Mexico. It is part of the Spanish Colonial Art heritage of northern New Mexico.

The weavers are known as Hispanic or Spanish, since their ancestors came from Spain in the 1600s.

There is no such thing as a "Chimayo tribe," which is one of the most-frequent mistaken claims in eBay listings.

Neither the weaving nor the weavers are Mexican, despite another frequent claim. Some of the same design patterns can be found on similar Mexican textiles, but generally only the Chimayo rugs have a wool warp/fringe. And the weavers are pretty sensitive about claiming their Spanish-American (not Mexican) heritage.

So do I, and I agree, a nice piece.

Chimayo is more rare than Navajo, btw, and Chimayo rugs/blankets are not cheap. They are made in a very small area with an interesting culture.

We go to Chimayo every trip to Santa Fe. If any of you go make sure to eat at Rancho de Chimayo!
