Featured A few spoons from the weekend

Good evening everyone,

Figured I'd take a moment to share a small find from over the weekend. These spoons came out of a little bag I found at a thrift shop for $5.

 

That's the year -- 1898 -- that Spain lost its colony the Philippines to the USA in the Spanish-American War.

@MrNate Would these all be sterling and if yes, why? Still learning silver marks...

Mark on 1&2 are a bit hard to see, clues there? Then wondered about #3 where I only see the J&A.

Just curious as I know you often post sterling finds.

 

Great question Lucille,

#1. The spoon marked "1898" has marks that I quickly attributed to French Silver marks. I know from previous examples that a French silver makers mark will typically be in the form of a diamond shape. I honestly didn't identify the small duty mark, but the diamond shape of the makers mark was enough for me.

#2: The J.A mark on the other spoon wasn't much to go off of, however I know in American coin silver, and some parts of Europe, makers marks without sterling/duty marks are possible. This spoon had the "flexion" of metal that I would associate to silver, and that was enough for me.

#3: For the "Holland" spoon I found the marks matching to Dutch/Netherland marks for 835 silver or 83.5% silver.

The thrift probably checked for "925" or "Sterling" and threw everything else in the bag. Nice find!
