Featured Antique Lidded Box - Unusual Root Wood

Would anyone be able to identify the very unusual root wood used in the veneer of this antique lidded box ?
It reminds me somehow of olive wood, but I've really no idea.

The box measures c. 17 x 13 cm and has an unusual embossed leather (?) depiction of a town inset into the centre of the lid. Unusual, certainly.

Reminds me of Prague, but I can't find the right angle where everything looks this way, so probably somewhere else.

 

Prague was my first thought too. Those are onion domes so right-ish part of the world.

Unfortunately not - at the moment anyway. I very nearly bought it earlier today, but my interest has waned slightly, so I've held off. However, I find the wood pattern quite fascinating, hence my posting.

 

Yes, it is. I think the box could be vintage, rather than antique.

It looks like being some type of Walnut, then.

Although I must admit that the patterns bring back uncomfortable memories of the visual distortions that used to precede my regular Migraine attacks !

 

Oh I hate those - mine are the real bright shimmering ones that start as a dot then turn into a "C" shape, then fade away after about 30 minutes. But then the migraine starts and usually last 1-2 days.

Weird! That is exactly the kind I get. Same aura, same pattern, same timing. 2-3 a year actually.

Oh my lord,this happens to me but with no headache,I just did some googling and I have retinal migraines. Had no idea. It's horrid as I can't see for 20 or so minutes but it passes. Happens if I look at white things on darker things, like dark mode. Am SO grateful to know what this is, I just thought was me...so grateful to know what it is so thank you xxx

Yes! I very occasionally get a visual disturbance like that photo, it develops and curls in on itself. It’s so odd I can focus on it. Started when I was pregnant for the first time. Oddly it rarely turns into a migraine, just occasionally.

 

K I am utterly intrigued by this. My optician said he thought it was because of my dyspraxia. Sorry to hear you get pain as well, mine is just temporary blindness ( which god knows is bad enough )xxx
