Are you sure there is not an 8 on either side?

I looked at the number 8 on other stamps and the 8 have a thin line in the middle not thick like this one

Why would an 8 on this one necessarily be the same as 8s on others?

    I put next to a 8 on a similar stamp 89535EC8-4539-46B3-9E89-A5902F4BAB40.jpeg

I wonder if the 8 is the same for a issue printed out, if all the 8 look the same for George Washington ones and this is the odd one

What seems unusual about yours is the color if it's for 8 cents.

Edit: As komo shows, the color is not unusual for a 3 cent stamp.

Why would it have an S instead of a number? The time when stamps had to be printed in advance of a value being assigned & were given a letter was a long time later.

It doesn't look like it could be a three. The denomination looks kind of odd to me, and I'm having a hard time explaining it away. Much as I want to just dismiss this, it looks like $CENTS$ to me. Too bad the postmark obscures it, and that the stamp is damaged. You should post on a stamp collector forum. I'm curious what knowledgeable folk have to say.

I believe it's the postmark that is creating this illusion.

I think @Bronwen and @Roaring20s are right. It's a 3 cent stamp with the postmark misleading the eye.
