awhile back on auction. Is it a French style lamp? These type of lamps seemed to be popular in the 50’s or so. But I was thinking this looks later to me (maybe 70’s or maybe not,I don’t know) It stands 56cm tall and 21cm wide at the base.
Thanks for any comments and keep well.

Yes, 50s and 60s. Italian I think. Many were made of aragonite.

Thank you for the comment. It was between French and Italian to me (but was leaning towards French) I had to google aragonite :) (thanks for the info)

I had a summer job in an upmarket lamp shop a lifetime ago, sometimes things suddenly drift to the surface.;)
(Only to sink like a brick.:arghh::hilarious:)

Still impressive. Sometimes I can’t remember what I did or learned 2 or so weeks ago.

We had a shop like that in this area, before the Internet got them. It was a place to learn all sorts of odd things. We Antiquers all have weird odds and ends tucked away only for them to pop out at odd moments.

I have no idea, does aragonite occur in layers like that? It look to me like what my mineral guide calls onyx marble. (Really marble but commonly called onyx.)

I think 'onyx marble' is calcite and aragonite, not marble, and not onyx either. Many sites seem to classify it as aragonite.

    Polish aragonite ("onyx") lamp:

    Aragonite from Pakistan:
