This was in the box and it looks like it has an ID number. I am sure it’s not worth what the tag says they were trying to sell it for but I was curious if it looks genuine. Is there anyone here that knows about ancient artifacts?

The photos are confusing to me-- can you add another one that sorta orients it / makes it clear the shape, orientation and size?

I have no clue if it is authentic, but it looks like a glass intaglio (personal seal) mounted on a ring. It would have been pressed into hot wax to seal a letter or document of some sort. Yes, used in Roman times and sometimes found in British archeological sites.

Agree. Looks like a seal ring and the rest. But that’s all I know

Interesting item. What was the seals itself usually made or carved out of? It just looks in very good condition to the rest of the item (looks out of place and stuck on to me) But I really don’t know very much about these things. Was there no COA or any documentation with this? (age/period dated?) Is the ring gold? Must be if authentic?

But also weren’t seal rings usually bigger? Good idea to cross reference the ‘emblem’ with the period. ID no. like what museums used? (Pity that No. can’t be cross referenced, but it would be nearly impossible)

You can press it into blu tak to see better what the intaglio shape is.

I don't think the ring has to be gold to be authentic, I buy a lot of detecting finds and had my own detector as a child and these are often in things other than gold

I will try to send a better picture tonight. It is about one half a ring. The actual ring looks like clay. Like I mentioned it was in a box on EBay with about 100 ancient Roman coins. The seller on EBay was Noble Spirit. I believe he sells a lot of stamp and coin collections. Here is the info that was in the holder that the ring was in. 9544EC67-144F-41DB-A7EE-17D748F8EF22.jpeg

Try the Portable Antiquities Service, they'll tell you.

I think it's right, anyhow. A little carnelian intaglio in probably bronze. They're found a great deal.

Paste, it ain't. And his price is ludicrous.

Looks like it could be what it says it is. The sticker looks like either a museum sticker or maybe from the archeological dig. An inventory/reference number.

I very much doubt legitimate archeo dig finds could end up on eBay unless things are done very differently elsewhere. Here in the US, the preliminary dig proposal defines where the collections will be housed for curation and access for further study. They aren't allowed to be de-accessioned. Please enlighten me?

I don’t know anything about antiquity laws. I believe it was listed as Roman coins on EBay with this included in the box and the writing, paper and tape on this item number looks old. I imagined maybe this was someone’s collection from earlier years.
