I picked up this great little marble top table in Central Texas today. Image searches come back with a lot of tables described as "French Bedside". It has no markings. Age feels like mid 20th century to me. Any idea where this might have been made, maker, type of wood? Is there a name for this style other than French Bedside? Thanks FBS1.jpg FBS2.jpg

    Is it lined with zinc?

No, it's just an open cabinet. It has supports for a shelf but shelf is gone. FBS3.jpg

In the auction world, I would catalogue it as a Chenet. I love that stipple panel work.

Thanks, Laura. It looks like you meant to write "Chevet", which is French for bedside. Searching with that name I also came across similar cabinets referred to as Confiturier or jam maker. Apparently these small cabinets were used in kitchens as well to store confit pots. Like this 19th century one in oak. Confit.jpg

AARGH!! Siri!!! Yes Chevet! Some were lined for the 'chamber pots' or just made to look like one.

To me personally the marble top doesn’t match the look/design of the cabinet (but that’s just me) I found online descriptions: Marble top rustic night stand/cabinet. French farmhouse bedroom furniture 1930’s.

Is the look/design of cabinet itself typical french? (just asking)
I couldn’t find anything exactly like it.

Yes, the marble top doesn't seem to be the right size either, so quite possibly added later. Not sure about the style. With the moulding, which appears to be sunflowers and leaves, and the bead trim, it has a bit of a Jacobean Revival look to it.

Doesn't look particularly French to me, though it could be. Would think Continental most likely. Agree the marble might not be original. I think it is probably circa 1920. The wood is pine.

Thanks, @verybrad , I was thinking it was pine but wasn't sure. Do the mouldings suggest any particular region to you? Is "bead trim" the correct term? I saw it called "pearl beading" as well.

Bead molding is what I would call it. Was used everywhere. The pressed floral design is a bit more distinctive on a piece like this. Typical of the UK and USA, not sure how much it was used on the continent.

How was the marble top held in place? Might possibly be a wash stand, and the bowl and jug stored on a shelf in the cupboard.

I doubt if it was used as a chamber pot cupboard, as part of it would have been marble or porcelain lined.

Gravity. Here's a shot of the top from above with marble removed. There are small nail holes around the top, so maybe there was a wood top previously FBS4.jpg .

That floral trim is actually more typical of an 1880s American piece - a common aesthetic movement motif. The rest of the piece looks later. And the marble is certainly a clumsy addition.

The marble grands it up a bit, doesn't it.

Would have preferred a wooden top myself. That just looks like you had a spare piece of marble laying around. Really like the detail on the cabinet itself

My grandparents had one just like it in their bathroom, made locally (but I doubt yours was!), maybe a bit earlier, like late thirties, forties. The marble top also looked unlikely.

Yes, have heard that as well, 1/2 round pearl beaded molding.
