    Hello i am very confused at this moment. I have this armchair that i bought in Italy. I am researching it at the moment and i get many confusing information. It could be lambing chair from England or it could be armchair with a salt chest? i am really confused because lambing chairs were made with big side wings and in majority they dont have open back, because of the draft.. but the other possibility -armchair with salt chest- i dont get any information if they really exist, i know that russians have silver salt chests that are looking like armchairs but yes they are not really armchairs. The chair is made very "primitive" - which i like very much, it looks it was made by someone that didnt have much experience -or tools- with making furniture. It must be some what old, i am hoping that it is from circa 1750 - 1850. It has wooden pins and it has no metal nails. I would really like to hear what you all think about this armchair.. What do you all think about the age of the armchair and the real purpose of it?
    Oh and the measurmants: h: 95cm/37in w: 57cm/22in d: 48cm/18in
    Thank you all.

    I did research on a potty chair too but they had circle hole like todays toilets and really i cant imagine how you would comfortably sit on it during the need because the hole is very big :)

    lol, ok, maybe having used a modern indoor potty chair dry camping a few weeks ago I was admiring how nice that back rest would have been lol. Can you take a picture of the bottom of the chair?

    And rectangular.:eek::nurse:

    The seat looks original to the chair, so not likely to be a replacement for one with a hole in it.

    I deleted the word French after finding the English one, so I’m calling it Euro

    I could try to picture the bottom but the chair is very clumpsy and heavy, i have to wait for men power :)

    Yes i did find this lambing chair too from atlas, and i thought that was it..but now look at this:
    https://www.antiq.com/gerard-delsing-533/1700-french-saltbox-armchair-oak-1700-1985864

    Saltbox armchair? What the heck is this? and i found few similar and here the confusion start..and now i dont know if it is english french or the purpose of it.. So confused that i really dont even know how to look further. And what saltbox armchair even is, because i reaserch and found nothing. I know that salt back than was luxury so maybe it really was throne just for salt ?

    I really love to find the story behind the things i own and this really gives me trouble..

    My Grandmother had a small chair similar to this one. She called it the story chair which may have been her own term. We kept books under the seat. I don't think it is a potty chair because without hinges it would be very hard for a toddler to lift the lid.

    It would appear the people selling it or naming it probably are not sure as well, and possibly it has been used for both purposes in different households given their individual needs.

    my humble advise;

    If you intend to keep it, you have the right to call it whatever you like, and put the story you wish behind it. Friends and family can still adore it for its charm.

    If you intend to sell it, choose which ever name it goes under that sells for the most money would seem appropriate. ;)

    Life’s too short :)

    Sorry you are asking the wrong person to explain or confirm (it’s just my guess based on some other apparent antique English oak furniture that I have seen)

    I think it is an English oak commode chair.

    These chairs were generally believed to be used by farmers whilst waiting in draughty barns for sheep to lamb, and also to keep sickly lambs under the seat to keep them warm.
