Bought this a few weeks ago. I know it needs some work, but I figured it was worth the price and I was hoping it might be silver. I don't think its silver because the pearls are faux. on one of the rings, it's marked something like "Gesetzlicht geschletzt," while it also has an odd hallmark on the clip.

tHE WORDING MEANS REGISTERED DESIGN. iN MY OPINION IT IS TYPICAL LATE 19TH c.

    Bloody caps lock key.

I don't see any Jugendstihl about it.

    Thanks!

Now that you mention it... I wonder if it's not a watch chain at all, but a charivari.

    Thanks!

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

I think that mark you're showing is the front half of a rearing horse!!

It could be a maker's mark.
Most German regional men's dress used to include a charivari. It could be from the region where you currently live, why don't you ask someone who knows about local traditions.
You probably mean gesetzlich geschützt, protected under law.;)
I believe schletzen is a Swiss verb, if I am correct it means the same as the German German schliessen, to close.:D But Fid knows much more about that.

I think it might be part of the Stuttgart mark :)

Thank you! I need to check. I'm in North Rhine-Westphalia.

It looks like a complete mark to me, not part of a mark.
    Not far from me.:)

That's some nice country up there....I lived in Krefeld for 6 weeks back in the late 70's , studying weaving at mills in the area.

I feel a bit uneasy about Stuttgart. only one I found in my booklet is a complete horse with one foreleg lifted AND it's not oblong but round like most of the rest of German city marks. from the form it comes near to some Austrian ones like Graz.

We could have run into each other. That is around the time I used to go shopping for shoes in Krefeld. Dutch shoe shops didn't sell my size. The Dutch are tall people with big feet.;)

You can found a lot of those items in Switzerland, end of the 19th beginning of the 20th century, some were enamelled, often with swiss cantons or regional ladies in costume, always made in white metal and with a lot of names which all will say "like silver" or unalterable etc…
Sold in the campaign fairs by sellers travelling through the country and often wear with traditional men's clothes.
They are intertesting to collect because the price was never so low than since 10 years…

    Gesetzlicht geschletzt

I used to learn German and I think that means that the design or the closer is protected against replicating.
