Saw this today and liked it a lot but was a bit pricey and not sure if profit can be made. Plus, few things bother me. Comparing the siggy with other online, the artist is supposed to be Frantisek Cermak, 1822-1884. However, I just don’t feel the painting being 19th C. Also, the note on the back is obviously not by tge artist but why his name is signed in a similar manner as in his artworks. Any thoughts?
The very bright colors are out of keeping with his work or the 19th century generally. Even if this is a painting and not a print of some type, it's a copy.
It’s a painting. Why would someone do a copy of not that famous artist? I wonder if there was a later artist with that name and maybe a lot of the works online are wrongfully attributed.
I wonder a bit if the copyist didn't confuse Frantisek (or Franz for the Austrians) with Jaroslav, both from Prague; brighter colors, more Balkans influence and subjects etc.. both lived in an era when oriental beauties were en vogue and easily in reachable distance in the Habsburg Empire.
'After' Frantisek Cermak, I'd say. Both paintings are situated in the Balkans, where Frantisek made several paintings. The costume on both is either Kosovo, Albania or Macedonia, which were all just south of the Austro-Hungarian border in Ottoman occupied Europe. There was regular travel across the border. There was a time when the Ottoman Turks prohibited music and dance in their part of the Balkans. The people would dance inside. That is when those heavy coin necklaces came into being. The coins would clunk when the women were dancing. That would be their music, but it wouldn't be heard outside the house.
My family also has paintings by Fr. Cermak witch are dated mostly after 1920. I believe it must be another painter, not the one we can find info on wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/František_Čermák_(painter). Our paintings were bought from Arad - Romania, a city right next to Hungary.
Here is my family collection of Fr. Cermak signed paintings. https://issuu.com/mateiputiciu/docs/fr._i._cermak_collection I've tried uploading to this site but I couldn't.
