'Help'.. What is this ??

Hi Peter and others, I hope you can help with identifying this piece, I can't find any similar pictures of it and don't know what it is called, or what it was used for.
(Pic1) I think the wood is mahogany. Cabriole legs. (Pic2) Note carry handles, top door closed to left, note small button knob to lift door, other side is open box. (Pic3) Lid rolls over 180degrees and sits flush on other side, note button knob handle on this side as well. On this side of the door there is a 3 sided rectangular slide (to hold something?) 6" x 3". Beside that is a short 2" hollowed out piece of wood with a spring loaded ball at the centre to hold something else? Also from this view note the low partition board on LHS making a 2 1/2" wide x 4 1/2" high compartment. The floor of the larger compartment is also a hinged door. See (Pic4) Hinged door with small hook clasps on the inside is open.
(Pic5) End view of cabinet with bottom door open. (Pic6) Brass ??? decorating all around. (Pic7) Bit wobbly Crown emblem burned into bottom of cabinet. Appears to be a very well made piece, all joints etc are good and tight doors etc fit snug. Can you please help with any info, that would be great. cheers Wotacroc

Thanks for that info, any more clues on the 6"x3" slide or the 2" holder with spring ball ? Doesn't look big enuf for chamber pot thing. Entire cabinet only 22" Long, 20" High and 15 1/2" Wide. Largest Compartment is 12"x9"x5 1/2"high (That's the open top?) Also any clues on the under side door??. Don't know where you are daveydempsey? I'm in Albany Western Australia. cheers mate

It looks like a chamber pot cabinet (or whatever they are called) to me too.

I can't and won't disagree with you and Davey on your first impression but I feel there is more to this piece than just a chamber pot cabinet, I would really like to know what the other features are for? ((6"x3"slide, 2" slide with spring ball, and bottom opening door (from the inside?) and if the burned in crown has any significance)). I'm having a Bundaberg Rum & Dry awaiting replies if forthcoming. Cheers Wotacroc

My guess was a sewing cabinet also. Those carrying handles and compartments also help me feel that way. I am not much up on British and continental furniture.

Welcome, and it looks like a fancied-up file cabinet to me.

Chamber pot? Not so much.

 

I had always thought that chamber pot cabinets were lined with metal (for obvious reasons) and designed so the pot slid in rather than lifted in (for obvious reasons.)

Welcome. My two cents - The handles on the sides look like it was supposed to be able to be moved easily from place to place. I can see why you are attracted to it.

 

Looks to be for a pretty specific purpose but can't think what that might be. The card holder appears to be for labeling. Makes me think for office use but can't imagine why the bottom would drop out like that.

 

I didn't notice the card holder. That's strange that you can only see it when it is opened. Maybe there was a device in it to shred paper.

 

Maybe the fittings under the lid held a needle case and an etui.
