    Hello again,
I am thinking to buy the pencil below, it's solid gold 14 karat and it expands. Also has a metric system in inch, not very accurate. I am not a collector, but it's signed, and would like to ask if anyone here can recognise the name A WAugh.
Does anyone knows the exact name of this expandable pencil?
I have been told that it may have a mechanism inside that is not gold and that may weight allot. Is that true? How does the pencil expands?
Its a bit expensive and would like to ensure that I am not wasting my money.
I have done some research and the best name it came up is Arthur Evelin Waugh, but I am thinking why would he need a ruller for...
There is one more detail I will share with you later....
Please feel free to copy anyone whom may know about this.
    Thank you.
    Kind regards,
    Simona

There was also an Alec (Alexander) Waugh, brother of Evelyn and son of Arthur Waugh. Alec was a writer as well.

Other than that, I don't know anything about pencils.:sorry: I do think rulers come in handy, I use mine every day.:)

Mechanical pencils are very collectable, hence the pricing. Most do have some non gold as part of the mechanics which is why they aren't usually sold as gold weight. This can be steel (try a strong magnet if it sticks there may be a decent amount of steel inside), they also used brass though which is non magnetic.

If the name doesn't have any provenance then it's just a name - you need to be able to tie it down to someone through historical detail to add value, this is usually very hard to do, though occasionally possible.

Thank you for your answer. I have tried using a magnet when I looked at it, but it does not magnitise . I can say for sure that the tip has a mechanical movement as I could turn the led in and out, there is something pushing it out . It looks like inside tip is brass as well, it does not magnitise.
I looked at the names, will try to find something hopefully.
Any idea of the age or design?
I will divulge the maker a bit later, it's a well known brand, that's all I will say for now :)

I’d call it “retractable ruler mechanical pencil” when searching, or listing.

I'm not sure here, the golden age of mechanical pencils was the early 20th century and many of the novelty ones are from this period, with the more traditional types running back into the late 19th century. The pin striping design is commonly found on Deco items, and was revived in the 70's.

Value takes a hit (collector market) if it's personalized, unless you can prove it's someone of importance.

Add "telescoping" to the search criteria...

    Why make everyone wait?!

You can also book a free cleaning at Tiffany, maybe they can tell you more about it?

I jave talked to them, and they would not give me the name even if they had it, confidential . Their customer list goes back 10 years.
I have enquired about the age of the pencil, they can have a look, but can't say for sure.
Any one here recognises the year it was made?
Maybe will narrow it down for me a bit.
    Thank you.

I would put some research time into how to spot a fake Tiffany and base your decision on that. NEVER trust a seller.

One of the major signs of a fake Tiffany is the quality and centering of their mark. Look at the space between the second F and the the A...not good. The mark is off-centered, out of square, and nearly touching the edge. Each letter in the name is slightly out of alignment with one another.

Big red flag - they won't give you the name because they know it isn't a real Tiffany piece. Just MHO.

I do think they have customer confidentiality, apart from the fact that the pencil is likely a fake.
