I was wondering if any of you nice people know anything about this picture. I know it is the Govenor General georges Vanier and his wife, and the portrait photo is signed by the famous Onnig J. "Cavouk" Cavoukian photographer. I think it is signed but i cant find an example of his signature nor his wifes nor any idea of the value. His history is fascinating. any information would be great. I got it from Canada. thanks in advance

there are collectors for this sort of thing......but value can only be determined by the market at the time of sale.

Here is link to a sale of a 1960 photo of the Governor General alone that is signed by him and famed photographer Yousuf Karsh. Strangely, the first name Georges looks very similar to the signature in yours and the last name Vanier doesn't, at least to me. This is on Worthpoint and is an old eBay sale. (Date sold and price can't be seen without a Worthpoint subscription.)

Komo is right that prices for old photos may vary a lot. Time is one factor, the venue of sale and how well advertised is another. And who sees it and how much they want it is another. That applies to a lot of items, but I think photographs vary even more than some other kinds of items.

It doesn't look to me like he signed with his surname on Josh's copy. Only Georges. The name to the right is Pauline, his wife's first name. The inscription looks personal ("our affection" in French.)

The signature by the photographer "Cavouk" looks like it was signed on the negative, which means it printed out whenever a print was made from the negative. But it does identify the photographer.

What Bakersgma said on the names.

Vanier became GG in September 1959. Never met him personally of course, but I do remember him. He was very Govenor General-ly.

here's the pic , used for a book cover...

while that may add some value........a Karsh photo would be something completely different..

thank you. I looked at the signature under a magnifying glass and it appeared to be live ink. not having found another, makes me think this may be an original. thank you so much for the input
