    hi folks

found this ring in a charity shop today. i dont think its a precious metal, its got a gold and silver colour, so think its was originally a silver plated brass (doesnt test as gold)

but wondering if it has any age to it as seems quite well made

i associate that colour of glass to older pieces but unsure

    any thoughts appreciated

    I dropped a massive b****ck today
Still feel sick about it, couldn't even eat my dinner
Basically I found one of these today, and the lady said its gonna be a tenner(didn't look like this at the time)

Said I wasn't interested, but told her I think it's a begging bowl

She went straight on the internet to look and found the same one for £400

The ones pictured are £365 for 2

And I've found larger ones sell on ebay for £200

But after I said nah, and she found the price while I was still there in the shop I felt that funny hot heart thing :)

I know that sick pang of pain, I get it every time I go past my local YMCA shop where I didn’t buy two Liberty armchairs for £60:(

    I know right

My thoughts at the time were, why on earth would a beggars bowl be made of silver

Surely he would just sell the thing :)

I don't see anything opaline about the glass. Looks like it's meant to mimic turquoise. Could it have been gold plated silver?

I suppose that could be a possibility, don't know how you tell the difference between opaline glass and basic opaque glass, but I'm sure such a thing exists

    Just tested not silver either

I'm surprised as its got a nice look about it

from what ive read opaline glass is semi translucent, which this is, so a good sign that it is opaline glass

It's a beautiful color, it reminds me of chalaine glass that was made during the depression.

Thanks pearls, I've never seen a colour glass that looks like it that wasn't opaline or milk glass, something different about it

Turns out it wasn't made of silver after all
She started polishing it and the copper started showing through
She still wants £50 for it now, but wants me to try to sell it for her.
I said if it only makes £50 she can keep it all, but will share any advances over 50. Just curious now
    Thought I'd show you all

So the story on the begging bowl comes full circle! All those sick pangs of pain for nothing. (Been there, done that.) :)

It's always the mistakes you dwell on the most, no matter how many good things you find

It's easy to loose your confidence sometimes

But now I can always take up begging for a living :)

I thought it was quite well made as well for what it was. A quality costume piece it would appear.

I believe this is opaline glass but someone may correct me :)

Given the work that went into the ring, it is possible that it was a salesman sample. I had one of those at one point years ago that was full costume with all the right marks. My local antique jeweler pointed out to me what he thought it was and he's older than dirt.

    Hi there, @charlie cheswick
Can't add any helpful information about your ring, but I think I own the cousin to it (mine needs a good polishing when compared to yours), with a purple-ish glass "gem" instead of a turquoise glass one. If you plan on wearing it, I must warn you that the metal, at least on mine, is very easily bent and the pointy bits like to catch on loose weaves and open knits.

    Hi quirkyg

How cool, thanks for showing, certainly looks the same.
I have been wearing mine recently so duly noted

I cleaned mine up with just a sunshine cloth, and it came up rather lovely
