Double the purchase price at auction is the rule of thumb I've heard and seems to be used on Antiques Roadshow, more or less. But I'm curious, since I don't insure the furniture I own, can you make up your own numbers for everything? Doesn't the insurance company want to see your receipt to show fair market value?

I believe in the case where a claim is made, you can submit comparables to prove your replacement cost.

    I've got carpet somewhere.

    And spare beds, even.

She means, if she can see her carpet, and has a few empty beds, she can't be a hoarder. ;)

You can see my carpet in most rooms and there's no stuff on the beds. The spare room futon is under three feet of fabric but.... :cat::cat::cat:

Here very expensive or unique items in your home needs to be specified beforehand (depending on what it is) The insurance company may send out an evaluator/assessor to verify before listing the item on your insurance policy (with a ‘nice’ increase to your monthly premium/payment)
