Hello - this is my first post on your forum - looking forward to learning a lot.

I am usually an audio nerd and look for vintage stereo equipment, but sometimes I find other items to bring home. Case in point - this credenza marked as being sold by John Stuart and made by Johnson Furniture in Grand Rapids. It has been fun researching John Stuart Co.’s history, but I cannot find any images that remotely match this piece. If anyone has any information to offer about the style, era, type of wood, or maybe the designer, I would be very appreciative. And if anyone has a question about an old receiver or turntable, let me know!

    Thanks-

    JB in Vermont

This is from the "Discriminate" line designed by Bert England c. 1960. According to the catalog, available online courtesy of the fine folks at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, most pieces are of mahogany. I'm a big fan of Johnson and have had a number of their pieces over the years. John56D01B.jpg

And style-wise, the collection was aiming to be a "time-bridging" mix of classic and contemporary. As the catalog states: "Discriminate draws upon several classic sources without compromising the cosmopolitan sophistication that places it among today's finest furniture".

Are those tambour doors? What's behind them?

Those are not tambour doors - they swing out. I will get a photo posted with the doors open soon. Unfortunately I have it in a barn for now. I call it my rustic, semi-enclosed recreational storage facility. My house is full of MCM furniture and stereo equipment - I’d have to move something out to make space for it and that is a tough call. I am more into the Mid Century look.

If I decided to sell, does this style have a presence in the marketplace? Would anyone want to venture a guess on value? I know that John Stuart, Johnson Furniture, and Bert England are all strong names in the field, but did they fruitfully come together in this instance? Thanks again for all your comments.

It would have more value if the designer were a better name , like Paul Frankl, or more MCM in style. It looks to be in excellent condition. It would probably sell in the $300-$500 range in my area (Texas). A little more in NYC, SF, DC, a little less in other areas
