Old rocker from Hawaii (me and the chair), I just like the way this looks. From a high end donation place in Honolulu. The wood is all intact and looks like it has been in storage for a long long time. The seat and back are stuffed with coir (coconut fuzz) the webbing is intact on the seat back .. the rest is falling apart, all the wood is held together by glue, good fit, and dowel. The arm rests are stuck into the rocker as is the back which is one piece of tapered bent wood. It is a beautiful piece of work. Can anybody tell me the story of this thing? Thanks in advance. No idea, but I bet it's pre-WWI. Some of the real furniture mavens will be along shortly. They'll want images of a joint or two (the wooden ones, not ones rolled and smoked :cigar::cigar::cigar:) and probably the underside.

Late 19th Century, probably locally made. It follows contemporary "mainland" styles with it's bentwood arms. Don't know the kind of wood.

Most rockers have virtually no value these days, beyond their utility. Millenials just don't like 'em. This is an unusual one, and well worth taking care of.

The woven back and seat are done with Shaker tape. I can't tell from the photo if it can be repaired using the extant material. Not hard to do if you are so inclined. Replacement tapes come in many colors. Instructions are on the Web. shaker tape.jpg

Well, it depends, some like this Sam Maloof rocker below are in demand. In 2012 a Maloof rocker set a world record for an American rocker & sold for 80k at Bonhams in LA but generally speaking, that's correct, rockers are not popular now and hard to give away.

The sensuous curves and subtle walnut grain of Maloof's rocker just seem to beckon and say “Come on in a sit a while.”

Thank you all, especially 'darkwing' for the shaker-tape connection. It seems to be from the middle to late 1800's, and there are a few just like it ..that have showed up in auction photos though the years. It is fun that it wound up here in Hawaii. We don't have a lot of old furniture (for many reasons :)) I will fix it up nice ..and post a picture here when I am done...:wideyed:. Thanks for this site it is a good one!
