This is another find of mine from Geneva's fleamarket. It is a larger than normal Mid Century sideboard. The dimensions are 120x160x50 HWD in centimeters. There are no markings on the back or bottom indicating the maker. There is this square S logo inlaid into the veneer of one of the doors. Does anyone recognize it? Any thoughts on the piece?

    Thanks!

    Dan

Don't know but I like it a lot. The way the S is inlaid makes me think this could be a one-off craftsman piece. Can't imagine a factory marking in this way.

    Welcome, DanM.
Yes, I love it too. I was a little worried about the use of the Phillips head screws for the hinges, which are a bit hard to see in your photos. So I looked it up and I found Phillips head screws were invented in 1930, so they could easily have been used for your piece by a quality and modern craftsman.

The lack of precision in the linlay makes me think it is custom as well. Regardless, not bad for 150 Swiss Francs.

I respectfully disagree. We bought it for utility. I cannot get a piece at Ikea with half of the storage or 10% of the quality for two or three times the price.

I have to disagree as well. I don't know for how many years you already live in Switzerland, but frankly it's out of question to compare anything Swiss to Ikea crap.

Darn right! The Swiss know how to make things well and to last.

I was trying to show the value point .What else can you get for 150chf? Nothing that is worth anything .

For the record, we have been here for 11 months

Yeah, agrees. I think you did very well for 150 chf which is about the same in US dollars. Swiss furniture is usually well built & sells for premium dollars in USA, not sure about there.
I went after this small late 18th century Swiss table a month or so ago at auction and got blown out of the water! Some dealers here in USA told me that antique Swiss furniture sells for big numbers here, very desirable among decorators.
Auction house didn't know what they were selling but some at the sale sure did!
    Sold for $7500. USD

those MCM atrocities can be bought outide posh cities for 50 to 80 if you look a bit around. most were dumped long time ago. or go a bit around in the streets the night before the garbage collection; that night is called French Sale in most parts along the Franco-Swiss boarder. a good chance is that such stuff is sold by "French" on the Swiss side in marchés aux puces...

LOL, OK Fid, I am easy, have it YOUR way!
But, the fact remains that @DanM could not buy a saw dust piece at IKEA that is anywhere near as good quality for $150. in today's world.

Oh, aren't you so special with your Swiss passport.

I'm fine with my diplomatic carte de legitimation. It's nice to not pay taxes on most things as well as our income.

for all here that do not know the situation in Geneva.
interesting states like Zimbabwe or even non-existing stuff like Palestine etc. send people to the so beloved and completely useless UN-institutions. they behave as if they were the kings of the world. besides not paying taxes, they often keep their domestic workers worse than slaves, don't pay them any salaries and sometimes mistreat them and beat them up - done a.o. by the former Gaddafi clan.
    fines ? not for them...

paying the bills in restaurants ? are you joking ?

now that's not the problem with them really. but imagine your postman down in Texas or up in Washington have to go and live in Mexico or Canada because they can't afford to live in their own countries due to such a bunch that press up the cost of living so much with the money stolen by their mostly corrupt governments that the normal inhabitants can't afford to live in their hometowns anymore.
in Geneva that's exactly what's happening. most live in neighboring France, therebye driving out the French middle class southwards towards such slums as Annecy or Lyon.
politicalwise it has the nasty side-effect of corruption and right-wing-extremism.

and about the carte de légitimation: not sure what is looked upon as superior in a real crisis.
