I have been looking for days but am unable to even make out the name. So now I'm turning to the professionals. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What does "true sense" mean? Because they made decorative pieces that means it isn't fine art? I don't understand.

And I read the article, but it in no way implies this isn't "fine art."

It would be considered decorative art. To put it bluntly, your work was produced in an art factory run by Vanguard Studios. It was made to hang and enjoy -- as you're doing -- by a company that hired freelance "artists" to produce works that had lots of eye appeal. (You can do a Google Image search and find lots of other examples.) They were sold in furniture stores as decorative accessories. In addition to the link above, there's more information to be found about Vanguard Studios with an internet search.

It is also possible that it was produced on a production line where several artists “contributed” to the piece, each with their own color, etc.

hang it and enjoy it but don’t waste your time trying to research it.

All I can add is its pure 1980s . Oh,and it is decorative but not much chance of finding the artist.

Please don’t be insulted by being told your piece is not fine art. I assume you don’t really understand what the term means. The definition of fine art goes back to the Renaissance and was really related to a consideration of being of the highest aesthetic sense but today when people talk about fine art they’re talking about art that is made by a recognized artist and museum quality fine art is collected by art museums and has secondary market resale through fine art auction houses. Your piece doesn’t meet any of those requirements but art is subjective and all that matters is that you like it. BTW an unreadable signature does not by any means always denote a decorative piece but it is a “tell” to note and yours is purposely illegible for that specific reason.

The art world is really moving away from denoting work as “factory painting” as so many museum quality fine artists are indeed working in studio “factories” and not producing their own work. Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst are perfect examples of that but “commercial” is still a pretty valid term IMO to differentiate a piece like yours from fine art. Even “decorative” becomes problematic as there are plenty of “decorative” artists who are collected by museums and are auction worthy.

As others have mentioned, no fine art will ever be referred to as “wall decor” or will be “inspected”.

Meanwhile, all that matters is that you have a piece that pleases you.
