I bought this because it was interesting and old in a previous life. The light bulb cannot come out as the top is secured or maybe it was a lantern or lamp and they secured it. It is brass and possibly copper as no part of it is attracted to a magnet. It measures about 10.5" tall without the hook. The inside of the base is hollow and it has a number 503 on the top and the bottom. Anyone have any idea of where it was used, military or nautical? It is very heavy. Thank you. IMG_0007.JPG

Some of the people make guesses, which I appreciate, but I gather you know this for sure? Wow, the heaviness of it. I was guessing military with the weight. Thank you!

@verybrad is a wealth of information. Never doubt him. All you have to do is search "Antique battery powered miners lamp" and you will see many examples.......

Love the quote!! I figured it was correct, but I had looked before I even posted, and wanted to confirm. In fact right after asking if he meant it as a guess or a for sure, I went to another of my posts in which he responded and I had told him he was knowledgeable in a lot of areas, a renaissance man. Hope if the question on here insulted him, which I absolutely did not mean it to be, he saw I wasn't undermining him. I guess he would say if he was just throwing it out there to be helpful but wasn't sure. Thanks.

As fyi, for those interested in other websites with info, in looking for mining things, I found "outoftheblueartifacts.com". Mining, antiquities, fossils, a ton of info.

Where did you get your photos? I was hoping to pin down to manufacturer or if this kind is made over the pond?
