Carved olive wood weeping man

Please can anyone tell me the story behind these weeping figures? I’ve seen a few but no explanation.
Does this one likely have any age or is it a newer tourist piece?
It’s not well carved but it fits beautifully ergonomically into your hand. I’m thinking he will stay with me as the equivalent of a kids fidget toy as it is very tactile.
Im presuming olive wood- the wood is quite dry, any suggestions for conditioning it please?

It's called the weeping Buddha. I had one once.
