Can anyone tell me style, period, age of these large chairs? Found them at a humane society and heard they were donated by an old Catholic church. Are they pulpit or bishop chairs?

Welcome, lworkalday! I see have another thread started for this same pair of chairs (which is really unnecessary and might get confusing.) Since you've got the pictures up here, perhaps @Bookahtoo could delete the other thread?

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Poor things have seen better days!!!!! NOBODY was offering any comfort with those newer board seats!!!! Too bad as well, that the left one is missing the top center carving.....here's an idea.....take a night carving class and make a new one!!! They're neat looking chairs!

Gothic revival. Would think late 19th to well on in to the 20th century.

    Welcome Iworkalday.
I'm with Brad, Gothic revival, which lasted longer for church related items. And as yourturn said, chancel chairs.
I don't think I've ever seen a chair in a pulpit, btw. Bishops usually have something more grand to sit on.

These are right up opoe's alley, where has he been hiding anyway. @opoe are you all right?

Yup. Late 19th C Gothic Revival hall chairs. Probably had caned seats.

I believe we can make a plaster cast of the top center piece and use particle wood material filler to recreate the missing piece. The chairs had red velvet seats recently. There are very old tacks on the bottom of the seats and bits of velvet under them. I wonder if a cushioned seat used to be on them, not cane...?

The read seat connection to the back, where the upholstery was attached previously?

    Sounds perfect.
Yes, I have only ever seen these chairs with cushioned seats, never cane. Which doesn't mean they don't exist. Red velvet sounds authentic for these chairs.
