Hi all. Picked up this 6x8 watercolor (like I need ONE more picture) even though bullfighters arent my "thing" having grown up with Cuban relatives who adored them along with flamenco dancers! But this one is so well done plus it was $3 so SOLD. Its clearly signed "F. Lugo" but the only references I can find on him were that he did postcards for Mexico in the 30s-40s. What got me was how bright the colors still were for as old as it is. Any and all comments gratefully received.

What size is it? The proportions look like those of a postcard and high quality commericial art postcards from the first half of the 20th century can look like watercolors, with no dots.

Probably a Taxco artist, has that look.

The actual image is 6x8 but its mounted on a mat of some sort. Ive louped it and I do believe its an actual watercolor.Apparently he was a postcard artist, but Ive not found any examples of his actual art.

That is larger than a postcard, but pretty much the same proportions. Maybe it's the original painting for what was then turned into postcards?

When I first saw it I felt it has the look of an illustration. Maybe he did illustrations for books or magazines as well as postcards?

Original illustrations will almost always be done larger than the printed size. It makes for better detail when the piece is printed.

One other thing occurred to me, a comment I remember from the Antiques Roadshow years ago. They were looking at a painting with an animal in it, a horses or a cow. The appraiser said the value of the painting would be higher if the view was of the front end of the animal ;)

But at $3, I think you did very well!
