I spotted this candelabra at a consignment store yesterday. Normally I'd avoid buying something so bulky since I'm going to have to ship it back in a year, but I really adore figural candlesticks and have always wanted one. It doesn't have any visible marks.

That looks more like polished pewter to me. Very nice.

I agree, pewter rather than silver(plate).

Thank you, it didn't occur to me that it might be pewter. It does look rather tarnished; can pewter tarnish?

pewter can get duller....I'd say patina rather than tarnish...
    It's very nice !!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

It's pretty, and even better -- you found something that you like!

Pewter is inherently duller than silver. Whatever you do, don't polish it!

    Thank you! :)
Thanks! The more I look at it, the more I like it :) I just wish I knew how old it was.
It has some whitish residue in some of the crannies. Would it be all right to wipe it down?

    Thank you!

Look at any easily unscrewable parts for marks too.

Yup, take a soft damp cloth, stick a finger nail inside and gently prise out the gunk.

    Hi,
I used to clean out metal candle holders by putting them in the freeze for an hour or so and all the wax would pop right out. I had one old one that I spent hours on trying to polish up until I realized it was pewter.

I still do this when needed. I find the pointed end of a metal nail file is very good at popping the frozen plug of wax out & scraping off anything left.
