This was being given away locally online today. I put in a request and was told I was 4th in line. So I just offered a small sum and was given rights. I haven’t picked it up yet. It looks federal to me. I know jack about furniture though. So when is it from? I can’t tell if the top was replaced with a solid piece where two doors were or if it’s one that opens from the side and the knobs are gone. Also can’t tell if base and top are a marriage? The colors look pretty different. The batwing hardware and glass knobs look like they could be old. I figured it was worth a chance with the small amount I paid. Only have one photo for now. 05D39D0F-E9EA-4248-B07D-51D2C073C851.jpeg

It is Georgian in style, but from this photograph it is hard to tell much more. If "right" should be made mostly of oak, with minimal deal, an veneered in mahogany. The glass knobs are totally "wrong". It doesn't look to me like a marriage, and could easily be made to look very nice, whatever its age.

Thanks for your insights! Car is in the shop but I look forward to getting it back. I’ll be updating the thread with more photos and intel.

As a learning opportunity what says Georgian vs. Federal about this piece? I truthfully don’t know so a very sincere question.

Federal is an American style of the Georgian era, from the independence to about the 1820s in which appeared what is sometimes called American Empire, America's response to the British Regency and French Empire.

The form with rounded ends and drawers dates back centuries, but the vast majority of examples are from the early 20th Century up to about 1960, inspired by the Colonial Revival.

Yours is from the early to mid-20th century. Values of examples in great condition range from about $100 to $400, but without any TLC yours is probably worth about what you paid for it.

Uh oh. That’s not good, but good to know! :) We’ll see what I’m able to hustle out of it at the end of the day. Between the small sum I paid, gas, inevitably hurting something (on me) trying to get it in my car, up my stairs, and back down my stairs, maybe it won’t be worth it. Hopefully it will though. It’s interesting looking enough (at least to the novice) that I’m hoping I’ll get a bite from someone who just wants something old and different than the norm.
