I've just purchased this unusual shell-shaped scallop edged plate/dish which bears what appears to be a heraldic crest.
Despite my efforts, I can't seem to find anything similar to it on the net.

Despite my limited experience, I get the impression that it is no later than early 19th century. As to origin - hmmm. I don't think it's Chinese export ware, so probably European.

Would anyone be able to have a guess as to the approximate age and origin ?

    Thanks !!!!

Since submitting this post, it has occurred to me that this piece might just possibly be yet another example of an Edme Samson (Paris) ripoff of an older, much more desirable piece (eg a Qianlong period export dish). Hopefully not, but still, a horrible thought.

I think this dish is for trimming your facial hair.
You hold the plate under your chin.
Someone will correct me if I'm wrong!

Is the smaller red design in the plate supposed to be someone's profile or a floral motif?? Hard to tell.....INTERESTING & nice "plate"!!!

Really!? That's so interesting! In carnival glass this shape would be called a Hand Grip Plate. But I've no idea what those were used for.

Could it be a town seal? Plates with town seals were made as tourist pieces.

When I first saw this plate, it reminded me of Russian blue and white porcelain like you see from Lomonosov with the net pattern.

That's the first thing I thought when seeing it. The grey-blue enamel and the way it's laid down along with the soft gilding is very much like Samson work.
