I have finished going through the 2nd album and found many famous Judges, Senators, Newspaper Men, Publishers, Clergy, Etc. There were six unidentified men in the album. One could possibly be Ralph Waldo Emerson. This family was friends with and married into a number of famous people like Oliver Wendall Holmes and Ralph Waldo Emerson. If anyone recognizes any of these famous men, let me know!! If you would like to see the others that were identified, you can click this link. There are a number that are unidentified from France, those were from another album associated with this family. Only two were identified in it. One album left from this family, all identified!

The second one certainly does look like a young Emerson and the bearded man looks a lot like a young Whitman.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Emerson was born in 1803. Carte de visite photographs with rounded corners such as the second one were starting to be used in approximately 1870 -- before that they had square corners and often a stripe or two around the edge, similar to the first and third photos above. So the second one, while it looks a bit like Emerson, would not be him since he was in his late 60s when that card stock was first used.

The only photo of Emerson I've found where he was not clean shaven appears on this page:

... And now that I'm looking a bit more, that is Henry David Thoreau in my link above. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_David_Thoreau

Don't think Emerson ever had "mutton chop" sideburns like on that 2nd pic or was that good looking.

Old Wally certainly had a white beard to rival this one, but the face/head shape doesn't seem quite right.

I tried to find another white bearded man associated with Salem during that time frame. I could only come up with Alexander Graham Bell that lived there for a year or 2 in the 1870s - not him. I give up, I haven't a clue to any of them.

104 Honorable George B Loring 01312015_0000.jpg Thanks to all who have looked. I wish I knew who they were as everyone in the section of the album was famous for one thing or another, like this guy I have attached.
