I'm calling this little porcelain bowl a "salt bowl" because that's what we use it for ;).

Asking about it might be a little naughty, as I'm sure it's not antique. But we know nothing about it and I'm confident someone here will, so here it is for any and all input.

    Thanks for looking!

You might not be that far off, as the size would be right for a soy/oyster/fish sauce bowl which is quite equivalent to a Western salt bowl.

Looks like 1970/80's ish production to me, not much to go on with the mark, but it might be trying to be a 'Tongzhi' seal.

Yes, it could be -- but it's not very stable and I would almost certainly knock it over on the first or second dunk. ;)

If that is in inches, I would think it's way too big for salt or sauce--more like a rice or noodle bowl.

Ahh, well spotted, so used to seeing everything in metric I hadn't even considered freedom units!

Edit: No it must be cm after all - unless the inches are split into 10ths.

Oh, you're right, you're right, and here I sit with my freedom units. I never heard that expression! This is indeed a tiny bowl, probably for dipping sauce.

Can't remember where I first heard it, but it seems like a fun expression.

There used to be (maybe still do) decimal inch measures. Confess I have never seen or used one.

    C
CeBCA calls inches "freedom units." I don't know why, but it sounds cute.

It's a joke on the term "freedom fries". Do you remember that bit of silliness? Circa 2003.

We steadfastly held onto our Imperial measurement system when the rest of the planet is on the metric system. Happened under Pres. Carter in the 70s. Fast forward into the future, freedom units. You can check Wiki for more detailed info.

I do remember freedom fries, now that you bring them up.

Silly me. :playful: I thought describing the bowl as "little" and saying we use it as a salt bowl might be enough. But no. Today I woke up to find the thread has grown to include references to Jimmy Carter and fried potatoes...

I'll try and locate a clean foot rule for future postings -- my only American ruler is badly bashed and the 25' steel tape measure feels like overkill. In the meantime, here's a still life with salt and grapes, © Hamburger 2021:

Sorry, I'd nodded off by the time you asked, it's as the others have said.

That sounds like a challenge for someone to find irl and post here!
