19th c Porcelain Monkey God, Yellow with Green symbols

I've seen this figure before and I thought Id been successful with researching it but now seeing it a second time I've fallen short with my findings. This figure might have done better in the tribal art section where an expert in religion and ethnographic items may help.
Looks English to me but unsure. The first time i saw it it was called Japanese but I highly doubt it is, nothing to suggest this other than it being of a monkey.

 

If anybody would know I suspect it would be @Any Jewelry.

He does look very satisfied with himself or maybe that is suppose to be serenity.

Hanuman is of course the first thought, but eager to hear AJ's explication.

 

Good Heavens! Had to look up Hanuman - never heard of him. When I have a week or so, I'll read the whole write up.

But Hey, my knee jerk was working!

 

I'm afraid I have none. He bears no resemblance to Hanuman to me, but that's just me.
Maybe a representation of Sun Wukong, famous Chinese Monkey God from Journey to the West, etc.? Nathan thinks it is English, so maybe from a story familiar to British people?

 

And then you need another couple of years for the more in-depth studies.

 

Do you have a bottom shot? There was a mysticism movement in Victorian England. Perhaps he is connected to that? It's possible he doesn't represent anything in particular but just a general representation of higher levels of contentment. I'm getting relaxed just looking at him and I have way too much to do today!

He doesn't really look like Hanuman to me either, or not traditional presentations, H is just the only monkey god I know.

Perhaps. Think he is meant to be from India or Asia, with the nose ring, earrings/ear plugs, & symbols maybe hennaed on body, rather than Africa. Can't remember a Just So story involving a monkey: like Hanuman, the only thing in the relevant category I know to suggest.

Hanuman has caught on somewhat in the West, so could be H in a non-traditional form?
