Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

That latest obit was for the son of the original owner. It names his father in the obituary. So the theory would be that the son inherited the bowl. As for the year, maybe one of the children inherited and then sold it... or the inheritor died. OR, perhaps it took a long time to settle the estate.

Whoops, posting at the same time as inh!

Or maybe it was sold a few years ago, and then sold again (inspired by komo's post about it going through multiple hands).

Everyone may just have seen the inscription and figured it was the usual Oneida silverplate and dumped it off.

To add to the discussion of “how did it get there” I think there are lots of potential options. One option that we should consider is the original owner knew exactly what the item was and decided to donate it anyways.

There is an online auction site for goodwill, and the amount of gold jewelry and silver that makes it to donation is eye opening. I’ve come to the conclusion that a fair number of these people are intentionally donating valuable items, not necessarily due to incompetence or misplacing the item.

:) It could be true or it could be false. But it’s definitely possible. I scratch my head often when I find valuable things at thrift stores (not just silver stuff). I’ve come to the conclusion that some folks just don’t want to go through the hassle of selling something, it’s just easier to drop it off at a thrift shop and be done with it. Do you ever think about how much silver and gold has made its way to a landfill?

I had a small gold chain I lost, ended up finding half of it when I took apart my broken washing machine. I must have had it in my pocket when washing clothes and it slid between the holes...

I always tell people to check the linings of jewelry boxes before tossing them, for just that reason. One lady was ditching hers, and about to pitch it into a garbage can. I told her to check the lining, and out popped Grandma's gold watch. Check those linings, people!
