I have a very large mantle or fireplace surround in my home that I am ready to sell. I have no idea where to begin. How do I find its value? Where on earth would I sell it? I’ve seen smaller pieces for sale on Craigslist in New Orleans (about an hour away) for around $1,200.

It’s about 8 feet tall, 12 deep and about 5 feet wide.

I can't tell if the mirror is beveled. If it isn't then the mirror has been replaced. That lowers value.

Are the one's near you selling? Or just listed for that high price?

Here in CA, that would be about twice what I would expect. But each area is different.

    You could try Craigslist.
You could also contact a dealer and see if they take consignment and at what percentage. It they are only going to give you 40% of the selling price. Ask them what they would price it at. Ask them if they want to buy it at the 40%.

If selling to a dealer, expect about one third of whatever they are going to mark it at.

They sell at auction houses around here (GA) depending on condition $200-600.

I don’t believe it’s beveled, but I’m not 100% sure. The mirror extends behind the wood, so I’m guessing not.
Do I just search for antique dealers and call them?

That looks like a nice turn of the century oak mantel. Here in N. Fl you might get $500 on a good day. Call an architectural salvage firm, antique dealers might give you 25% what its worth. But they have to lowball in this market.

Turn of the century and oak. Finish looks original and agree the mirror should be beveled. Probably about $750.00 tops at retail here in the Midwest. We have a lot of old houses here that can use these so some demand. A lot less at auction or other wholesale venue.

You can look in the phone book for dealers close to you. Walk through some stores, get an idea what prices are like in your area. Talk to a few dealers. Then approach them about selling.
You might ask some of your friends (older people are more into antiques) if they know of any reputable dealers.

You do not have to sell immediately to the first person you talk to. Sell to someone you are comfortable with at a price that is fair to both of you.

You are close enough to NO that people would drive to pick up something like this if they really want it. Could always start high and accept an offer. There is also facebook marketplace. Much better option than CL in my neck of the woods.
