Idle pressed glass question

The girl in a painting under discussion on this thread:

is holding what looks like a piece of pressed glass.


Water for the bird?
I can't find anything quite like it online (even tried rhyton).
Has anyone seen the like?

That's a blown piece.

 

It looks like glass to me. Doesn't look like a doll or figure. Could be a cruet, but I think that is inconsistent with the subject. I see it as she-opened-the-cage-to-change-the-water-and-the-bird-got-out.

Could be wrong of course.

 

Think you could well be right. The open door of something is right in front of her. I thought it looked like it has glass, but could be artist was indicating wire. An all-glass version of the type of water bottle that would have a metal spout now. Could be blown rather than pressed.

 

I thought it was a perfume bottle.

 

I don't accept it's a perfume bottle.
Hoping for a close-up before trying greater enlargement... and further discussion.

Look carefully at the shape. It's not symmetric, and I don't believe that's due to artistic interpretation.

 

Then you found more than I. Sorry for not seeing that. Might indicate the shape is more that coincidental. Do they show the other side?

I think the painting shows a side view of the object.

Well that does resemble the thing in the painting, doesn't it. Maybe there was some kind of nozzle attachment?

It's an interesting object. It has a dedicated use, and doesn't look to me to be particularly subject to re-purposing. It probably would have been common enough in its time, and not very expensive. But when the bird was gone, what point would there be in hanging on to it?

I guess there are enough antique bird cages around. You would think people would want the period accessories to go with them.

I do think the object in the painting has been successfully ID'd.

When I saw the painting, I thought it contained something to lure the bird back in the cage, which is why I said "I hope the bird has the sense to stay outside the cage."
