Woahh! Never heard of telescopic fans, yours is so interesting to see in different stages:woot:

As you, I use fans, because I hate hot weather! Cary a very simple old chinese one, all repaired with scotch tape, it belonged to my late mom who used it too during all summer:cool:

    Hi Kyra,
Thanks for the offer, I hope i get batteries soon. I think the fan is all glued. Seeing your Bell Epoch fans brought to mind of my favorite fan. I bought in the 1960s it was huge, it spread out to almost 3 feet and was almost four feet long. I used to kid and said it was burlesque queens fan for dancing. Later when I was selling it the woman who bought it said it was from the 1870s. It was white with black dyed ivory sticks with silver inlays. I did not want to sell it but I paid 10 dollars for it and the woman offered 400 dollars for it. It had a French name written on one stick. I never knew if it was the maker or the woman who owned it. How many times could you dance around it before people began to wonder?:D:D

You did right to sell it then. First, prices were higher then and second you could sell ivory then without all the hassle.

That was a HUGE fan:woot: Was certainly used for dance performing, even if burlesque wasn't in the air then (1870?)

This thread has been so wonderful to read! I admit to being a fan-fan too. It started many years ago during a trip to Singapore. To cope with the heat, I used to carry a fan everywhere and that's become a habit ever since. During summertime I always take one with me and that spawned a collection, humble though it may be.

One day, I gotta learn how to re-string these things.

That's not hard, how many string holes are there per stick?
These are the fans I use in summer, cheap Chinese sandalwood. The big one is 1950s, the small one 1970s:

I posted this one before in an other thread, antique Japanese, handpainted scene of immortals, paper on bamboo frame:

I love the dopey look on the dragon's face.

Nice touch, a helping hand, even on a fan:
