Sometimes it amazes me what family members throw out. Found these two framed behind glass, in a thrift store. They were both encrusted with filth. Took them apart and cleaned everything thoroughly. They now look beautiful. 6 stamps, 11 foreign currencies. Russian, Chinese and a Bank of England 10 Shillings Note. The English note has writing on front and back with a lot of different names and salutes of goodbye with one dating it August 6, 1945(Aug/6/45). I can only imagine some service man coming home with pocket change and unused stamps in his pockets from the war, and framing it as his memento to his adventure overseas. True, there isn’t very much value but I can’t believe what family member disregards sometimes. I’m posting this to honor his service, friends and memories.

Will sell on eBay and hopefully a WWII collector can see the value. Ugh

There was a tradition (and still may be) at the end of WWII that when a flight crew disbanded they all signed a currency and each crew member had one. I believe I still have my uncle's packed here someplace. He flew bombers out of England.

or as the dad of a good friend phrased it when he came back with a wife from Hamburg: I've seen Hamburg a few times myself...

When asked if he had ever been to Germany my uncle used to say yes, he went to Bremerhaven every night and dropped bombs on it

Sometimes when I find things like that, I can locate a descendant and they are happy to have the item. Most recently I found the descendant of a West Point alumni and I gave her his high school senior year memory book full of great quotes and wishes from his classmates. He had an amazing life including marrying an academy award winning actress from the "Golden Days of Hollywood." It makes me sad seeing some of the things that are cast aside at estate sales...
