I rarely buy pottery, but this large (12 inch square) hanging deep plate looked like a painting. I would like to know more about it. The mark says "Vietri Italy SRL and Vietri sul Mare (I think) and Hand Made. It is signed by the Artist Frans Brugman (Thank you @Debora for the name. The paper label was old and completely faded, so I thought it might be vintage. Can anyone help?

Great article. So you think this is Frans Brugman? Dutch artist. I will have to look up this German period in Vietri sul Mare. Thanks so much for the lead.

I think Frans Brugman is a he. Frans is a man's name, Francis.
A woman would be called Fransje, but that name isn't used much these days.

Good to know. Apparently from what I am reading he had a career in the Netherlands before moving to the coast.

I found this on Facebook - if true the connection to MC Escher and Mirko is very exciting. Mirko's post:
"Frans Brugman, Amsterdam 1931 - Vietri Sul Mare 2003.
My master and mentor Frans Brugman, friend and assistant to M.C. Escher, son of the celebrated Bert Brugman, creator of the famous Dutch character "Dappere Dodo"."

Someone is selling four of his plates (the seasons) for 1500 euros. Here is the text:
Series of four wall plates depicting the 4 seasons made by the master FRANS BRUGMAN in the early seventies in Vietri sul Mare.

Born in Amsterdam in 1931, after completing his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in the Dutch capital, in 1952, he arrived in Italy for the first time, staying for over six months on the Amalfi Coast where, after a visit to Vietri and its ceramic workshops, he remained impressed by this form of craftsmanship.

Back in Holland he devoted himself to painting and drawing but in 1967 he felt the strong appeal of the town of Campania and returned to Vietri where he began to devote himself to ceramics full time.

From the early seventies he began to collaborate with the faenziera "Ri.Fa." by Matteo Rispoli.

Franz Brugman is considered the last exponent of the so-called "German period" of Vietri ceramics.

I never realised Dappere Dodo was famous.:pompous: It was a children's puppet television series from my childhood. The series stopped in 1964, so I don't think many Dutch people would know Dappere (brave) Dodo.

Dodo is the puppet in red:

Thanks for tracking this down. I had a hard time finding anything, probably because it was pre internet. Maybe not as famous as Howdy Doody, but he has a Wikipedia page and 30,000 Google hits
