    The first time I posted I asked for a favor. I figured this time I should just share something I picked up yesterday. I paid $50 for it, but to me it’s worth that. American Watch Co., coin silver Model 1857 (I think) pocket watch. I think the serial number places the date of manufacture in the 1870’s. I cleaned the silver but didn’t mess with anything inside, except blowing some dust out with a little air bottle thing. The ring on top is missing and there is no winding key, but I ordered a replacement on eBay already. I was able to wind it a half turn with some needle nose pliers, and it still works! Normally I sell the things I find, but I might keep this one around for a bit! From what I understand, the American Watch Co., of Waltham Massachusetts was one of only two companies producing watches during the Civil War. Though, this one seems to have been produced a few years after the end of the war. After a rough start with only 50 watches produced in the first year, they gained in popularity with Union Soldiers and became a staple timepiece. Even Abraham Lincoln owned one. His watch changed hands a few times after he gifted it to one of his advisors, but was bought by the rebranded Waltham Watch Co. for an undisclosed price and is on loan to the Smithsonian. My favorite thing about this Watch is the scroll work done inside of the watch case back. It’s interesting because they didn’t have to do that, but took pride in their work and wanted to deliver something that was beautiful both inside and out. Unfortunately I can’t figure out if the watch case is original to the movement. But they appear to be from the same timeframe. If you have any more info or corrections please let me know.

    Vietnamese eggshell lacquer-work on the little picture, Johnny, believe the little harp seals are Oxford. And where are the pics of the new blue-eyed babies?

The babies are just barely motivating,and they are living in my mexican pansies so when I can get a clear shot Ill post them.I stand there looking down into the thick bushes,and I see 4 little sets of eyes staring back!

    @JoshA

    Don't worry about posting (too many) questions --that is the whole idea of the site. We have some members that ask about 10+ items a week. Never hesitate asking.

    I think you should post your watch under "Antiques", even if you feel that might be redundant. Maybe you could just cut and paste from above. The Finds thread is mostly to declare "finds" and although someone might briefly comment with an identification or clarification on an item, more commonly things move though very fast and within minutes can be on to a different group of items. Also not everyone reads the Finds thread.

    Just an idea. It might get more eyes. Looks like a nice watch.

    Also @johnnycb09 I will add my voice to the growing request for kitten photos. :cat:

    We only did two garage sales (more then 15 different sales going on in the region...!), but the first one was more then interesting.
    The cars, the garage and the marble pilaster came from the same house for 14 euro.
