Purchased on eBay for the grand sum of £2.99.
Glass and brass. It was covered in old glue so I’ve removed all that and polished. I don’t know if the black stuff on the back was paint of some sort of just tarnish but it was flaking off nastily so I’ve removed most of it.
It had a slight bend that I’ve managed to straighten out as much as I dare and now just needs attention to the C clasp.
The photos make it look horribly shiny now as I really struggled to get photos with the glare. It is shiny but will hopefully tone down with a little time.
So my question is- what gems would be suitable for this period brooch to replace the missing ones?. More turquoise glass?, not sure if I will find matching.
It’s also missing a dangle- Pearl?, turquoise? Coloured glass? Round? Pear shaped?.
I’ve got lots of cabs and dangles to choose from, hopefully something the right size!. Thanks for looking and any advice :) 94AF292F-49D6-4270-B661-E691CD08D1F2.jpeg 913B6F9D-6B98-4A4C-B3A4-A55909F137A4.jpeg 0A0AF551-6AA0-4CA7-8460-EEF928650FC4.jpeg 7DC83995-4BEB-4AC2-8555-1C91A9AF0C2F.jpeg 608E6685-40DB-4BF7-97F1-D4D64B1F89DE.jpeg

I wouldn't worry about the shine, it was meant to look like that when new and the brass colour will get richer over time. During the Art Nouveau most base metal jewellery had glass or quartz type stones, cultured pearls were not readily available at this period. I think if you could get matching cabochons in a green tone, or darker blue they would sit well and be in keeping with the period aesthetic.

Very nice, K, and very Art Nouveau.:)
The dangle was probably the same colour glass as the remaining cab.
You probably won't find exactly the same colour. I would take the remaining cab out, put Czech cabs of a similar colour in the settings, and add a teardrop/pear shape dangle of the same colour as the cabs.

Brilliant, Thankyou. I’ll have a look through the stash.
Can this be dated any more accurately than AN?

It is a pretty short period, but I would guess towards the end, given the fairly short tubes of the hinge. It is a transition to the round hinge that is still used today.

Are you sure about the age? The setting on the left looks out of line so a stone might not sit in there without gapping. You are right about finding the right color turquoise but that would be my choice. A little glass or pearl droplet would add to it.
It reminded me of a brooch my mom had; she bought it at an import shop in China town San Francisco in the 50's. Her settings were filled with jade chips.
The fly wheel clasp and the length of the pin would tell me it is of a later period than Art Nouveau.
P.S. I like the shiny brass.

My eyes could be deceiving me, but I see a C-clasp.
Long pins are a feature of many antique brooches. Pins got shorter in the late 19th-early 20th century, although long pins were still used.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

It's lovely -- and of course we'd like to see an update after you've worked on it. Either in progress, or finished!

I'd think circa 1910 or so. Agree with aj, I'd go all turquoise on it. Nice job.

Can’t wait to see your “katisation”;)!
    So far so good:)
I’d try to follow AJ’s advice, and remove the remaining cab to replace all in consistent color, or depending on what you have in your stash:joyful:

I agree, glass stones, and the turquoise color looks great. I wonder if that loop on the back is not for a dangle but for hanging on a chain? Either way it's sweet and I am so glad you rescued it!

I think the loop would make it upside down as a pendant, though, if that makes sense.

I think you might be right; I wonder we might be viewing the brooch upside down too. I like the way it looks turned around.

The way the pin goes means KSW photographed it the right way up.:)

The loop tells me it was meant to be worn either as a pin or upside-down as a pendant, although there could have been a dangle instead at some point.
