Hello, any thoughts on this piece welcome. It's a 13" diameter x 10" high brass or bronze footedbasket with a nicely articulated bird on a branch with leaves and a handle in the shape of branches wrapped in cord. Trying to identify metal, age and origin. Bird1.JPG Bird2.JPG

If you can please edit your post and select Full image instead of Thumbnails, it would be easier to view them.

Very interesting! Thank you for posting this link. The handle and wrapped cord are very similar as well as the incised design.

Worn gilded areas on Bird looks like copper or bronze. Have both birds legs been repaired as I can see solder?

It certainly has a Japanese look, the treatment of the bird is very much in that aesthetic. Looks like it may be a soft gold wash over copper which was a fairly common process out of Japan in the inter-war and early post war years, but also from other areas of course. How soft is the metal? If it is very soft and flexible like pewter it may be antimony.

Thank you for your comments. The metal is very hard and cannot be bent.

There are some kind of letters, middle circle of the underside. Looks like Latin letters not Asian characters, but not totally clear so that could be a mistake.

The birds legs might be a different metal, copper would be too soft IMO and it looks too dark for copper inside where the break is and yet the rest of the bird looks as if it might be copper. Be good to see a close up of the broken leg. The other leg has what look likes solder at the top where it joins the body.

What looks like letters is just toning on the underside.
