Went to a moving/tag/estate sale this morning at way too early in the morning. It was disgustingly humid out there today, and got so hot I came home at 11:30AM. That first stop was the best one - spent $40 including some fabric headed to a children's charity once a friend makes baby quilts out of it. The "oopsie" in the pile is a Victorian watch pin with black enamel. No clue if it's gold-filled (probable) or something better. There's also an interesting bakelite necklace and a thistle pin of unknown composition. DSCF9326.JPG DSCF9328.JPG

I scored today, I picked up 2 cast iron dutch ovens! A Lodge 7qt, it is big and heavy so I might not keep it and a Griswold Wagnerware, more manageable 5qt with original glass lid. I really like cooking with cast iron:)
I also picked up some Strawberry Hill Pottery, 2 baby owls and a mouse, a Fenton Fan vase, older Fiesta serving bowl, a Czech Amphora vase, a Medalta pitcher in the basketweave pattern and a souvenir totem pole

That piece is stunning, evelyb. It is disgustingly humid here, too, and it was calling for rain so I skipped a festival and school community yard sale 50 miles away.

I love the blue vase, cxgirl.

I picked up a few things, will try to photograph the jewelry tomorrow.

This weather is killing my treasure hunting. I did get flowers for the porch.

One of the earliest legends in the history of the Cowichan Tribes, is the legend of the Thunderbird and Orca.

Life along the Cowichan River was one of plenty and good fortune for the Cowichan People. The Cowichan Bay, and Sansum Narrows was full of octopus, crabs, seals, and sea urchins, the beaches full of clams, and oysters. The mountains were bountiful with wild animals, berries, herbs, and roots. The Cowichan and Koksilah Rivers were rich with salmon, trout, and steelhead.

However, one time in the history of the Cowichan people was when the Rivers went silent from the sounds of salmon splashing up the rivers. The Cowichan people realized that there was something terribly wrong; there was absolutely no salmon in the Cowichan and Koksilah river system.

The people gathered along the shores, and then worked their way down to the mouth of the Rivers trying to find the cause. At the mouth of the river they discovered the cause of the disappearing salmon; to their horror a Supernatural Killer Whale had set claim to the mouth of the Cowichan River, and the salmon were all being mercilessly eaten. The Cowichan people paddled their huge War Canoes out to the Orca; banging on the sides of their canoes, trying to rid their waters of this mighty creature, but try as they might; they were unable to drive this skilled allusive ocean predator from their home waters.

The Medicine people of all the Cowichan Villages joined together to call upon the powerful support of a Supernatural creature known as Tzinquaw (the Thunderbird).

For four days and four nights the people sang their most ancestral spiritual songs to the Thunderbird, and soon the Thunderbird appeared, and was quickly locked in a fierce battle with the Orca in the skies above St. Ann’s field. The Thunderbird was victorious and the salmon run was saved.

    Nice account, Komokwa.

CX, I love your finds today. Favorites are the Czech piece and totem pole, but other items pretty cool as well. (I also cook w/cast iron -- lucky to find those!)

Evelyb -- that Bakelite necklace looks amazing, and agree that the Victorian piece (and many of the other items) were a SCORE!

I have a few odd ball things to post, had a pretty good day as well.

Good heavens! Pays to look under the bed! :)

Davey, do they just pay you a fixed sum to clear things out or how does that work?

Kind of an odd but interesting collection from yesterday. Vintage fireworks container (empty) Sumida Gawa set, etchings. These were all from separate sales. Might open a post about some of these.

Some of my fossils, there’s a piece of fossilised wood that’s axe head shaped. Some of the things I’m not sure about, maybe a bit of jet, there’s a frond in one of the stones, lump of marcasite, early bivalves, a belemnite, but the curved hollow piece I thought might be part if a mammoth tusk they hoiked out of the cliff here on the east coast of the U.K. I’m going to find out where it is and see if I have a piece of the jigsaw. When I get round to it. The other two in the last picture I bought at the car boot. C3251456-4967-4B0C-AF8B-7FABCA62ED0C.jpeg AF688621-F39A-452B-A39C-7732D1864307.jpeg

They pay me what I ask, :D
Depends on the size of the home, how much rubbish needs clearing out.
I have to order a skip (dumpster) in advance and they start at £110 for a small one upto £300 for a very large one.
Then I have to order my removal men at £40 per hour to remove the big stuff.
This is all costed into the fee of which at least half is for me.
