    Yes! there is a hidden compartment under the mask!

    It looks to me like the eye holes of the mask are actually holes that go through to the compartment underneath. Guessing you put a photo there with the photo eyes visible through the mask's holes, then could lift the mask to see the full picture.

    Marquis de Sade was alive and writing at that time, so no, not really risque or surprising for the time period.

    These were all the rage in 18th century, called mascarade:)
    Google for antique masquerade rings.
    As for "poison rings" the so called never held any :facepalm:.
    Rather a keepsake:)

    Despite their shared etymology, I don't think domino masks have much in common with the idea of a dominatrix!

    Well, i dunno, apparently these mask rings were popular in the 18th century to "Mask rings such as this one containing hidden love messages were popular throughout the Rococo period"
    You know what they say, women are WEIRD when it comes to jewelry and, I'd say that this mask ring is pretty dang weird!
