Hullo, my mother bought this from an antique shop in England a decade or so ago for about £250. I'd like any info on what type of desk it is, but I'm most interested in what age/year the desk is, value isn't important but still interested to have rough idea. It has some cracks in the wood but overall it feels sturdy. Think that's it, all i know about it is the handles have been replaced at some time and looks like it probably had wooden knob handles originally.

Desk surface top is roughly 37 inches long, 19 inches deep

It looks like a small sideboard to me ? Id say it has some age to it,though it looks like it was refinished at some point.Id guess maybe 1820s or so,but Im an amateur so wait for others to chime in. Lovely piece and quite a useful size.

I think what you have is a very early 19th century Sheraton style server. Similar pieces were made from the Georgian period onward and the turned legs are throwing me a bit. I settled on Sheraton since turned legs are not unheard of for the style. If the pulls are replacements, they are fairly appropriate ones. Would prefer to see a true ring pull rather than the bail. The best comparable I could find is on ebay….. Take the value with a grain of salt.

Here is another larger piece with mixed nomenclature that doesn't necessarily match their 1820 date of production...…

I would call it a Bow fronted Dressing Table, late 19th century

I too think it's early 19th C. I've a nice old cupboard with very similar construction. Handles look later -mine has small brass knobs, not rings. It's a dressing table, not any kind of dining room furniture, it's far too small for the latter.

That's definitely the closest I've seen to mine on Google, and yes the price they've put on that seems way off. I'm sure it's more of a dresser or ladies desk than a sideboard or server though?

Thanks for the replies guys, here's some photos of the underside

And here's a photo showing where i think it originally (or at some point) had wooden knob handles as part of the wooden knob is still there

Early 19th construction, probably country made. Give it a bit of lavender bees wax - tinned, never spray! - once a year. Polish it with an old silk scarf and your hands.

Definitely a dressing table but with evidence of wood stain on the interior and the hardboard back I think later 19th century.

Is the back hardboard? I think I see a single wide pine plank in pic #5.

Dressing table? UHHHHHH NOOOOOO, don't think so, top looks to high for that to me, what is height from floor to top of case?

I am goin with Johnny & Brad on this one, bow front sideboard or server, Sheraton, 1st quarter 19th century.

Agrees with above, naturally we could all be wrong but i doubt it! Course, it is english which is out of my field of interest/knowledge.

Wrong shape for a sidedoard. That kneehole insert is the clue, too. It's pretty typical of an English country dressing table of the period.

Brad, I agree, looks plank construction to me, too. I'll get a photo of mine, it's very much the same.

Sorry, on the height thing? Milady would have sat on a relatively high chair and this thing had a separate tri fold mirror. Her maid would be dressing her hair, and hence the height, so that maid was standing up behind her. My mama had a repro Regency dressing table which was much the same height.

No way is that a sideboard, it has kneehole entry, its a dressing table without doubt.
    See similar.

I'd still be interested to find out the height of OP piece.

OK, Thanks, I'd say dressing table then because of drawers on sides instead of cupboards. Server/sideboards tend to be taller as well, 36 inches or so.
    Still a very nice piece.
