Thank you. I have really curbed my jewelry buying, I only buy if it is dirt cheap and I can resell it.... and I am very good at keeping a poker face about liking something so I can see if I can get a discount, but I fell all over this one. I have been going to the mall for years, and I am friendly with the owner, so she gave me a discount anyway.

the owl isn't signed. when I first saw it I thought it was a whistle, but only the one hole. The base isn't flat so it won't stand up.

Hmmm. Functional in some way, not merely decorative. The one end looks like it was meant to be inserted into an opening & bolted in place. A handle for something? Looks a bit like, but not actually suited for, a cane head.

Surprised Komo hasn't had anything to say about it.

If you have a black light/UV torch, you can test your red stones, rubies fluoresce, garnets don't!

 

sorry, I should have the put the size in my reply. this is quite small, so too small for a cane handle but could have been made to fit into something. The hole doesn't go all the way through.

 

Make sure to clan the ring before testing, a dirty stone will give a false reading!

 

other than it being an antler owl...I have no clue what it is or who made it....
could be an incense stick holder for all I know !!
I first thought cane or umbrella handle......but I wasn't going to comment without a firm grasp on what it is......

still surprised..???

 

I don’t know the use of the owl, but maybe you could add gemstone eyes.

 

thanks komokwa It doesn't stand upright so I don't believe you would put incense in the hole. I just bought it because I like owls and have a few hanging around. He fits in nicely with my owl shoe polish holder

I'd be suspicious of red zircons, like the Black Prince's "ruby". They can be dark red like that. Zircons have varying levels of hardness, ranging from 6 to 7.5; I had to look that number up, but I remembered them being a little weird that way.

I love that owl. The red stones do fluoresce bright red under black light, so I am ruling out garnet and red topaz. I cleaned it, and it does test in the ruby range, thanks mforjan. Eveleyb, I didn't think of zircon... I do love blue zircon, and have a couple....I will have to wait for a jeweler or two to weigh in. Cleaned it is even more beautiful to me. The diamonds are stunning. I will keep you posted. The Black Prince's stone is red spinel, which is found with ruby deposits....I have been researching what this could be....

THE GEMSTONE SPINEL
Spinel is most famous for its deep red variety that closely resembles Ruby. These two gemstones can be very difficult to distinguish. Until the late 19th century, there was no distinction made between Ruby and red Spinel, as they look identical and are found in the same localities. Many famous old "Rubies" were discovered to be in fact Spinel. For example, the enormous "Ruby" that forms the centerpiece of the royal crown of England (the Black Prince's Ruby) was actually determined to be Spinel.

 

I bought this new back in the late '70s, and I think it's original. It's a favorite image, both for the deco styling and for that sort-of off-to-see-the-wizard vibe. Rolling Stones 1972 tour:

I saw them at RFK stadium in 72,it would have been a great concert except for the gate crashers and a lot of tear gas.

 

Sounds like a great concert anyhow.
