English would have full hallmarks not Sterling.

The metal could be a punched-out formed plate produced in the far East or in Turkey?

Exactly. I have been unable to find a pictorial mark like the one in your post. But I did see an entry for John Batt of Sheffield, England, an electroplater in business with his father beginning 1864. Listed as a maker of Britannia metal from 1890 to 1920.

This link shows the one reference I can find that mentions a figural trademark of a sphinx.

Unfortunately it does not show a picture of said mark. And as noted earlier, the mark is not correct for English sterling. This plate needs to be tested before you try to sell it as sterling.

As said, it's not English. Have seen the mark a few times before, on mid-quality holloware, almost certainly American, circa 1910s-'20s - haven't seen any reasonable attribution, would guess a small jobber, possibly stamping the sphinx at the request of a retailer.

John Batt was, as already said, an English plater, despite the sphinx, this piece has nothing to do with him. From Woodhead's 'Trademarks on Base-metal Tableware (1991), citation: 'White's Hardware Trademarks' (1892):

I have a small 4.5" diameter, 2.5" Revere type bowl with the exact same mark as shown in the picture. It is exact and my piece is non-magnetic and it is sterling. No other marks, no numbers. My bowl has a very ornate, very intricate design hand cut around the perimeter of the bowl. There appears to be some similar type workmanship on the item in this discussion. Did anyone get any farther on this mark? Thought I would take a chance since you all were having a detailed discussion.
