Featured Another odd duck (duck laying on large egg on top of nest) ceramic/pottery sculpture

Here's a cute little duck trying to hatch an egg that's way too big for her. Marked "© davis '86" - haven't been able to ID which Davis yet. Just thought this might bring a smile to some of you good folks It's about 6" tall.

That's EXACTLY how I felt after the birth of baby #2!!

 

OMG!!!!! THAT is SO ADORABLE!!!!!!! What is the duck made of....can you tell, what with the white like flakes on 'her'!!! HUGE SMILE!!!!

 

The whole thing is pottery - stoneware type for the duck and the base/nest. The egg is a bit trickier to figure out - it's opaque - but not super heavy - suppose it's a hollow opaque white ceramic material - it is cold to the touch - doesn't feel like plastic.

The splotchy pink stuff on the rear of the duck looks like paint that has dripped on it at some point. Seeing if i can gently scrape it off with my fingernail...

Total exhaustion, unbelievable

 

It strikes me as being a real egg. Goose, maybe? Bird looks like it was cobbled together from repurposed bits of metal. I thought it was a platypus at first.

 

She does look metallic, but I think it's just the glaze - definitely ceramic. The egg is quite lifelike but I'm pretty sure it's ceramic too just from the feel of it. If it is/was a real egg - it has some kind of glaze applied.

 

I think a real egg probably would be coated with something to make it sturdier & to keep it from getting completely dessicated. The egg's surface texture & subtle mottling are so much more realistic than the poor bird's are.

 

Yeah the duck is sort of cartoonish - but in a cute way!

 

Aaron, I know you said the artist is Davis, but can you get a better picture of signature, please?

I don’t think this one is up to the quality of yours, but I was trying to find if there was a different signature for this artist. It is Susan Davis, but there are allot of pieces that are incorrectly attributed to her.

 

Interesting - thanks for looking - similar style - signature definitely is different but maybe she signed different ways at different times.

 

That's what I thought. Worth investigating.
